The Gromble – Slam (Free Download!)

Indie bands these days are a dime a dozen but The Gromble are about to change that with the release of their first single “Slam,” an upbeat mood piece that starts with an irresistible hook and builds towards unexpected, sunny, vocoder fuelled bliss. “Slam” launches on the 16th of June, ahead of second single “Don’t Stand a Chance,” and an album later in the year.

Hailing from the warm shores of California, the five-piece grew up playing together in various bands and have established the kind of rare synchronicity that has helped them carve out their own idiosyncratic niche: a charming blend of orchestral alt-folk and indie rock, honed live supporting such acts as The Lemonheads. With the classical intensity of early greats Pavement, Weezer and Neutral Milk Hotel and a taste for the heartland classics, they arrive somewhere between Grouplove, Miniature Tigers, and Vampire Weekend. They take their name from a character in Nickelodeon’s Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, a perfect indicator of their unashamed love for 90’s pop culture and for the sense of humour runs beneath the surface of their songs.

This is music for when you’re coming of age, music to soundtrack the best years of your life. The Gromble provide something different for everyone in their refreshing refusal to settle for the status quo and as such, they’ve already been championed by such reputable names as Gold Flake Paint, VICE, KROQ, and Indie Shuffle.

More new music from NuBorg – ‘You You’ single out now

Hot on the heels of recent single ‘Sliding Off the Edge of the World’, NuBorg is back with another new single ‘You You’:

The latest track in her campaign to release her upcoming album track by track on the 15th of each month – with the album release due in August once all the songs are available – ‘You You’ is described as her most straightforward pop song yet, eschewing the darkness of previous, more atmosphere based efforts in order to write a full on playlist friendly tune.

The results are successful, NuBorg’s most immediately accessible song yet and a change from her usual sound. We’re looking forward to next month’s return to the more introspective form of previous songs, but in the meantime this is an enjoyable diversion.

Patrick McCallion’s Small Words – Rising Star Makes New Track Available To Fans.

Patrick McCallionHalifax’s very own Patrick McCallion is celebrating the rebranding of his musical persona by releasing the track ‘Light Entertainment’ to his fans for free.

As the singer/songwriter in the band ‘Small Words’ Patrick has already caught the attention of some key players in the music business, while previous release ‘Murky Waters’ has been causing quite a stir. The rebrand to ‘Patrick McCallion’s Small Words’ has been prompted by opportunities presenting themselves to Patrick McCallion as a writer and singer. Patrick feels that he has gone through too much under the name ‘Small Words’ to just drop the moniker.

New track ‘Light Entertainment’ is a rip roaring energetic commentary on the banality of lives lived out on social media, but ultimately it’s positive message, that you can achieve your goals with a bit of courage, makes this an uplifting ‘message song!’

There is an intelligent message and social conscience running through Patrick’s music, although this shouldn’t put off music lovers who just want to hear catchy guitar infused pop.

With impressive live performances alongside the likes of Primal Scream, Razorlight, The Fratellis and James Morrison and acclaimed releases ‘Murky Waters’, ‘Neat Little Package’ and ‘Nice’ Patrick McCallion is the real deal.

Punchy intelligent lyrics combined with impressive musicianship will surely see Patrick McCallion achieve anything he puts his mind to.

The Lowriders EP: Tracks from feature film ‘I Am Soldier’

When Zane Lowe says that a new group sound ‘like a proper band’, it usually means they have something about them. It also gives you an accurate idea of The Lowriders’ sound – full, powerful and driven by an indie sensibility that Lowe tends to enjoy in any new band.

It’s this sound – described accurately on the press release as ‘unpretentious’ and ‘recogniseably British’ – that has seen The Lowriders’ stock rise recently, after supporting The Futureheads, Peter Buck, Pop Will Eat Itself & Dingus Khan, as well as playing gigs at prestigious venues such as the 100 club.

The new EP, ‘I Am Soldier’, should help them continue this rise. A coherent flood of indie sound that fits together perfectly from song to song (without each one sounding the same as the last), this is a release for true lovers of a well chugged guitar.
